133711 - Youth Arts: Ceramics Spring

The Dougherty Arts Center’s Youth Ceramics Program helps young artists to expand their experiences with clay that they might not receive in conventional arts education. Students will learn about materials as they gain skills in various hand-building techniques while older students experience the pottery wheel. Each program month will center around a new theme, meaning no two projects will ever be the same and students can repeat classes as often as they like. Materials and firing included.

    625107 - Plan 9 Book Group

Until his 50th year, Immanuel Kant passed his days in the bourgeois life of a respected professor at the University of Konigsberg. Trained in rationalistic metaphysics, Professor Kant had no reason to doubt its tenets—until one fine day, when a copy of Scotsman David Hume’s An Inquiry Concerning Human Understanding crossed his desk.

Kant’s reading of it awakened him from his “dogmatic slumber.” He realized that Hume’s powerful argument undermined everything that Kant had believed, and that no progress in philosophy could be made until Hume’s arguments had been refuted.

Kant’s response to Hume was his Critique of Pure Reason.

    ***

The PLAN 9 BOOK CLUB FROM OUTER SPACE will read and discuss these two classic works of philosophy.

Our goal will be to work together to achieve an understanding of the ideas that Hume and Kant laid out for posterity.

This group is open to everyone. We will meet every Thursday evening, from 7:00 until 9:00, at the centrally located Austin Recreation Center—1301 Shoal Creek Blvd.

Beginning with Hume and moving on to Kant, we’ll spend about four months reading and discussing roughly 30 pages each week.

The first meeting will be on March 24th, 2016.

A meeting agenda and a tentative syllabus are given in the More/Files section.
